Amy Delaney

Proton Patient of Fred Hutch Cancer Center

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that proton therapy saved my life because it literally did! I am alive, healthy, and happy, have the most incredible and supportive family, friends, and dog, have a job I love, have been able to travel all over, and do everything that I love to do. I am forever thankful!”

Amy Delaney’s life took a transformative turn in July 2018 when she was diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma. Amy’s journey through cancer led her to the forefront of medical innovation, where she found hope and healing in proton therapy.

Amy’s decision to undergo proton therapy was not only guided by her ocular oncologist’s recommendation but also by the unique challenges posed by the tumor’s proximity to her optical nerve. In October 2018, she received treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Proton Center, now known as the Fred Hutch Cancer Center Proton Center.

Proton therapy, as Amy attests, became the catalyst for a return to normalcy in her life. Despite the initial expectations of losing vision in her left eye, she adapted swiftly. The treatment’s minimal physical effects, primarily headaches and exhaustion, did little to hinder her daily activities.

Amy emphasizes that this innovative approach allowed her to live a healthy, happy life, unrestricted by the shadows of her cancer diagnosis. As she approaches the significant milestone of five years post-treatment in October 2023, Amy reflects on the importance of proton therapy in her survival.“It’s not an exaggeration to say that proton therapy saved my life because it literally did! I am alive, healthy, and happy, have the most incredible and supportive family, friends, and dog, have a job I love, have been able to travel all over, and do everything that I love to do. I am forever thankful!”

Amy’s advocacy extends beyond her personal journey. She actively recommends proton therapy to others facing a cancer diagnosis, highlighting its potential to be less invasive with fewer negative side effects compared to alternative treatments. Her commitment to raising awareness stems from a genuine belief that proton therapy can be a game-changer in the fight against cancer.

In sharing her story, Amy Delaney stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, showcasing the transformative power of proton therapy and inspiring others to explore innovative paths to healing.
