Zapping Cancer: Proton Beam Therapy Effective in Targeting Tumors Says ABC-TV

ABC-TV's World News Tonight with Peter Jennings (August 17), in a feature by medical correspondent Bill Blakemore, called proton therapy "a new kind of radiation proving effective in the fight against cancer. Proton beam therapy, according doctors, zeroes in on tumors with impressive results and without the devastating side effects of traditional radiation therapy." The news piece features comments from Dr. Jerry Slater of Loma Linda and Dr.James Cox of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. It also emphasized that "proton therapy is also proving especially important for children with cancer. Since their bodies are still growing, they are at much greater risk from the extraneous radiation that protons avoid."
